In government job postings we often see that men are encouraged to apply for particular positions, and women to male-dominated jobs. I’ve always had problems with that, why favor any gender? Isn’t that what we are fighting for? Gender equality? How do women feel when they read job postings and see that men are encouraged to apply to a women-dominated position? Do they feel threatened and think “Oh now they are going to rule this type of position as well..”? If the reason is to implement equality, our government is using the wrong tool. IMHO..
If this isn’t enough, yesterday our Equality and Anti-discrimination Ombud Beate Gangås posted that she want government job postings to encourage gay, lesbians and transsexuals to apply. She says that government job postings already welcome _all_ to apply, and now she also want to welcome gays, lesbians and transexuals. Hello? Aren’t they among us _all_? And it is transpeople, not transsexuals Gangås.
What is going on in her mind? Or is it only me that have problems with this?
Gays, lesbians and transsexuals already have problems with being included in our society, how will her attitude help? Why can’t they just say “all human beings are welcome to apply”?
If they are printing “Men, women, gays, lesbian and transexuals are welcome to apply” what about the bisexuals?
My next question is.. How will a person who feel, when he or she comes to work the first day after getting such job, when the first question is : “How did you get the job, are you gay or lesbian?”?. I may be cynical but I think there are lots of people out there who would ask such a question. These are the people we should fight, not using dirty and foul methods like Gangås want to use.
I know several men who get talked behind their back by women because they got a position where they encouraged men to apply, they get teased and harassed. What do they do? They quit. I bet the same is for many women who get positions where women were encouraged to apply. Why is this happening? Because they are printing these things in the job listings! Tragic if you ask me.
Can someone please tell me if I am way off here? I have nothing against gay people, I write this because I worry about their case getting hurt by narrow minded bureaucrats.
By the way, Gangås is copying Jon Reidar Øyan’s statements from 2005, he were the leader of The Norwegian LGBT Association.

Hallo? Er ikke de iblant oss _alle_? Og Gangås, heter det ikke transpersoner?
Hva foregår oppe i hodet hennes?

Cheers!
Thanks Robin for that one, 2008 and people have to deal with such… Its harsh..
Amen, my brotha!
I like the way you think… If someone put, “Position open to all that qualify, including Realtors”, I’d feel singled out and offended. Especially if they said, “All Realtors, even those with bangs…”
Oh, and she left out “little people” on her list. Someone should go after her.
Hi Cecilia its good to see you! Ah nod, the little people, I bet that is her next project. Thanks for visiting me!
I’m with Cece (pictionary soon? email me!! reggysy at yahoo dot ca).
Its not gender equality if you give more preference to the supposed gender that experiences sexism. You can’t fight gender equality by giving special treatment to women for example.
Hi Fragile! Ah its good to see that I wasn’t way off. I can’t believe why the people “up there” doesn’t get it.
Thanks guys. =)
Gender abuse is a cause for which no one cares.. 🙁
Maybe the real message is “We prefer to hire GLT’s.”
You know, veiled reverse discrimination. Not a new concept at all.
It’s part of making people aware. First you have to break down the old way of thinking – which is what deliberately stating “Women/LGT/whatever are encouraged to apply” does – and once those minorities become more common in the jobs they never used to have, you no longer have to keep driving the point home.
